The Quran says: وَلَمْ يَخْشَ إِلَّا اللَّه (9.18) One who fears none but God. In ancient times, people used to have fear of God. Because they thought God could cast them into Hell. God Almighty could hold us accountable on the Day of Judgment for our bad deeds. Today science has opened a new door for those who have fear of God.

Science, for the first time, has explained how big the universe is. In earlier times, we used to believe that the stars were very small in size. The English poet Jane Taylor, who died in 1824, wrote a very famous poem: Twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are! We used to think that stars, moon and the sun were all small in size.  Science invented the telescope, which discovered that these stars were really big in size.

For example, our sun's diameter is about 7 lakh miles. The sun is a very small star. Other stars are thousand and million times bigger than our sun. Our solar system lies in the galaxy Milky Way, which has about 300 billion stars. And there are over 100 billion such galaxies in the whole of the universe. This is indeed mind boggling greatness! While thinking about all this, we are held in complete awe of God. We develop mind boggling fear of God. Humans were unaware of all this before. Earlier humans only knew that God can cast us into Hell. But today we have come to know of God's mind boggling greatness and glory. The awe that it creates instils fear of God. Fear of God is indeed very important. Science has opened a new domain, a new door into fear of God, which results from being in awe of God's greatness. This happened through science.
